Jesus describes servants staying up late, waiting for their master to return home from a wedding, and then flips the whole picture: if he finds them still watching, he will gird himself and serve them at the table instead. The master waits on the servants who waited for him.
Waiting has probably become a larger part of your life than it used to be, waiting for test results, waiting for a phone call from a child or grandchild, waiting through long stretches of ordinary time that used to be filled with the urgency of work and raising a family. This Gospel says something worth holding onto through all that waiting: the one you are waiting for does not arrive to be served by you. He arrives to serve you, and finding you still watching, still faithful through the waiting, is itself what he is looking for.
Paul's first reading calls believers no longer strangers but members of one household, held together by Christ as its capstone. A household built that way does not measure a person's worth by how much they can still contribute. It holds everyone, including the ones who mostly wait now instead of working, as fully belonging.
If waiting has started to feel like the main occupation of your days, this Gospel reframes it. Watching and waiting faithfully is not a diminished version of discipleship. It may be the fullest expression of it left to you.
The Rosary Tonight
The Sorrowful Mysteries tonight, since it is Tuesday. Offer the fifth mystery, the Crucifixion, for everyone whose days are now mostly spent waiting, and for the grace to wait as faithfully as these servants did.
Prayer of the Faithful
- For the grace to wait faithfully, trusting that watching itself is a form of discipleship, we pray to the Lord.
- For families reconciling after a hard season, we pray to the Lord.
- For all who have died, that their long waiting has ended in the presence of the one they watched for, we pray to the Lord.
Something to Do
Spend some of today's waiting, in a doctor's office, on the phone, wherever it happens, in quiet prayer instead of frustration. Notice if it changes how the waiting feels.
Substantive. Not Simple.
This isn’t a devotional soundbite. It’s daily formation that honors your decades of faith and speaks to where you are now.
