Yesterday's Reflection

Tuesday of the Twenty-Ninth Week in Ordinary Time

Reflection

"Gird your loins and light your lamps," Jesus tells his disciples, "and be like servants who await their master's return." It's about staying ready, the household lamps burning even after everyone else has gone to bed, in case the master's return comes late. Then he says something that turns the picture upside down: if the master finds them watching, he'll gird himself and serve them at the table, taking the servant's place himself.

Paul, writing to the Ephesians, says something similar in a different key: "you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but fellow citizens with the holy ones and members of the household of God." Whoever's in your house tonight belongs there, fully, not as a guest passing through on the way to somewhere else, and not on probation waiting to prove they've earned their place.

Both readings point toward the same quiet reversal: the household of God isn't organized the way most households end up organizing themselves, around who's owed service by whom. It's organized around a master who serves his own watchful servants, which is strange enough to be worth actually noticing rather than reading past.

Universal Prayer

  • We pray for our family, that our home would truly feel like a household of God, not just a place we sleep, we pray to the Lord.
  • For anyone who feels like a stranger even in their own home, we pray to the Lord.
  • For families reconciling after a hard season, we pray to the Lord.
  • For the grace to stay watchful and ready, whatever we're waiting for, we pray to the Lord.

Faith in Action

Tonight, before bed, light a candle and pray five minutes of Night Prayer together: a short psalm, the Our Father, and the Salve Regina. Bless each child at the door of their room with holy water. Leave a light on somewhere in the house overnight.

A Note for Parents

If your family doesn't already have a short bedtime prayer routine, start one tonight: a psalm, the Our Father, the Salve Regina, takes about five minutes total. Doing it at the same time each night, even loosely rather than by the clock, helps it stick faster than trying to force a rigid schedule from the very first night.

Ask your kids what they're "waiting for" right now, something good they're hoping arrives, and pray for that specifically tonight, by name if it has one. A birthday, a trip, a friend visiting, anything real to them counts.

If bedtime already feels rushed most nights, don't add this on top of the rush. Move something else earlier instead, so these five minutes actually get the unhurried attention they need to become a real habit rather than one more thing squeezed in at the last second.
