Yesterday's Reflection

Tuesday of the Twenty-Ninth Week in Ordinary Time

The Reading

"He will gird himself, have them recline at table, and proceed to wait on them." - Luke 12:37

Reflection

Jesus describes servants today, Sister, staying up late for their master's return, and then flips the whole picture: if he finds them watching, he girds himself and serves them at the table instead. The one who's owed service serves the ones waiting for him.

You are being filled so that something can be set on the table.

Paul's first reading calls believers no longer strangers but members of one household, held together by Christ as its capstone. A household, done right, isn't a place where care flows only one direction. It's worth checking honestly whether your own home still works that way, or whether service has quietly become something that only flows out of you, never back in.

Most women can name, instantly, who they serve. Fewer can name, as easily, who serves them, who they let care for them without immediately trying to even the score. Tonight's Gospel says the reversal is real. Being served isn't a debt to repay quickly. It's sometimes just the gift.

Paul's reading pairs this with the image of a household built on a foundation, held together by a capstone that bears the weight rather than adding to it. You're not meant to be the capstone of your own home, carrying everything so nothing falls. That's Christ's job, and letting him do it is not the same as being lazy or unhelpful.

The Challenge

Let someone serve you today without immediately trying to return the favor. Notice how uncomfortable or easy that actually is, and what that tells you about how you usually operate.

One Prayer

Lord, you gird yourself and serve the ones waiting for you. Let me receive that as freely as I'm used to giving it. Amen.
